Fiona stood rooted in the doorway of the den. She woke to a darkened room and no Marcus. She should have felt relieved instead of bereft, and hurried to wash and dress in an effort to distract herself. She tried to avoid glancing in the mirror aside from brushing her hair into place. She looked exhausted, although she managed a few hours of sleep. The clock had a backup battery and advertised the early hour, but she wanted to find Marcus and have it out with him. She could be packed and gone by the afternoon, with no drawn out good-byes with Louisa and the rest of the staff. She was certain Marcus’s lawyer would deal with things at this end and hoped Grant would find her someone there. She really couldn’t afford a lawyer but knew she would need someone to deal with the access and visitation for the child.

Fiona had already formed a strong attachment with the little creature now growing inside of her, even if she vomited yet again just because she brushed her teeth. She was experiencing little twinges of anxiety about how Marcus was going to handle what he would view as defection, but she was resolute. The rest of the Stewarts would probably accept her baby much the same way they had accepted her, and Fiona thought she could live with that. Marcus could be counted on for financial support, of that Fiona had absolutely no doubt, and she would take classes on parenting and read books and be the best mom ever. She knew she was overcompensating, but that was to be expected. She would also take care to ensure this child had a guardian, should something happen to her and Marcus.

As she hurried down the hall to the den, she heard his voice and then, to her amazement, her cousin Grant’s. She realized Marcus and Grant were talking on Skype, and then understood they were having a conversation about her, one that in her wildest dreams she’d never thought would take place. She’d come to believe that was all behind her, had never thought to return to it, and couldn’t make her feet carry her over the threshold.

The den must be cursed. First she learned in this very place why Marcus had married her, and now her cousin was talking with the man she loved and had married, sharing all her shameful secrets within its four walls. She began to tremble and shake, and the room spun crazily. She scrabbled at the door frame for support.

“Fiona!” Marcus nearly ran to her, his features taut with worry. He scooped her up and carried her to the leather sofa, lowering her to prop both her feet and head up on either end. He rubbed her hand between his own, and her breathing slowly returned to normal. Whatever normal was. Fiona didn’t know if anything would ever be what she knew as normal again.

“What’s wrong? Marcus? Fiona?” Her cousin’s voice emanated from the computer.
